Starting Points is developed by Focus on the Family Australia, for parents and caregivers of 0-4 year olds. Focus on the Family, Australia is a not for profit organisation which aims to ‘strengthen Australian families’ through community based initiatives. Starting Points is one of these initiatives.
The program seeks to reach communities of parents, both fathers and mothers and also grandparents, who are increasingly taking a major role in the care and welfare of their grandchildren in the preschool years. It has been developed here in Australia and focuses on what is already good and positive in family life, helping parents to feel confident in their parenting role. It looks at encouraging and supporting the relationships that are part of the child’s world. Although built on the Christian principles Focus on the Family holds dear, the program is not overtly evangelical.
You can read more about the program content on the Starting Points website. https://families.org.au/default.aspx?cat=67
One strength of the program lies in the training of facilitators who are part of their local community and have a passion for helping family life to be as good as it can get, encouraging parents to experience both the joys and the responsibilities that come with parenting. We have a facilitator training event coming up in Sydney, and would appreciate you passing the information around the Children’s Ministry Network contacts. I have attached an email for this. I represent Focus on the Family Aus. on the Victorian CMN.
Focus on the Family Australia has entered into an evaluation partnership with Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) Melbourne. Preliminary evaluation reports have revealed that the program is having a positive impact on the confidence levels of young parents in a sustained way (across time).
One of the pleasures of being involved in this program is the program patronage of Marina Prior, who gave us some time, along with her husband Peter, to film a promotional DVD about what parenting means to them and the way a program like Starting Points can help support parents in their parenting role.
